Item Description: Diana Vreeland's Yves Saint Laurent couture crushed black velvet evening ensemble, specially created for her to wear to the opening of the Metropolitan Museum's 'Royal India' show, 16th December, 1985, labelled and numbered 59641, the long slim-fitting coat with elaborate Lesage embroidery and beading of baroque golden glass stones, crystals, gold bugle beads and pink droplets lined in 'rose paris' charmeuse, matching long, slim skirt, bust 92cm, 36in, waist 66cm, 26in (2) The design is similar to those made for St Laurent's 'India' collection of Spring/Summer 1981. Mrs Vreeland had also commissioned him to make a Chinese ensemble redolent of his 1977/78 collection for the opening of the Metropolitan's 'Manchu Dragon' exhibition of December 1980.
